hard heads soft hearts

a scratch pad for half-formed thoughts by a liberal political junkie who's nobody special. ''Hard Heads, Soft Hearts'' is the title of a book by Princeton economist Alan Blinder, and tends to be a favorite motto of neoliberals, especially liberal economists.

"I am so hungry.

I’ve never meant those words in the way I do now. They carry a kind of humiliation that I can’t fully describe. Every moment, I find myself wishing: If only this were just a nightmare. If only I could wake up and it would all be over."

I was searching for the phrase "Netanyahu is finished", as one does, and came across this interesting article, by Harriet Alexander, from November 2023:

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12700671/joe-biden-benjamin-netanyahu-forced-office.html

"Joe Biden's aides believes that Benjamin Netanyahu's days as Israel's prime minister are numbered, according to a report on Wednesday, and are watching his potential successors closely.

Biden has told Netanyahu he needs to think about the lessons he would pass on to his successors, Politico reported."

"One current U.S. official told the site that the shocking intelligence failures that allowed Hamas to attack, and the unrest in some quarters at the massive loss of life in Gaza, left Netanyahu severely weakened.

The official said some believed Netanyahu could be out of office within several months, once the initial Gaza response is over."

For what it's worth, I never believed Netanyahu was finished. I don't even believe Rabin is finished. It will be 30 years since the Rabin assassination this November, and I believe the date can be an opportunity for reflection, remembrance, and, possibly, returning to the path of peace.

my single sheet of note-paper's worth of words:

A better world is possible. We can accept the situation as it is, then search for ways to improve upon it. We can find policies that advance both our values and our interests. Do not give in to the forces of defeatism and demoralization, and do not give up on the idea of excellence, both in your government, and in your self.

How Much Broadsheet Reading / Web-Surfing Does A Man Require?

My current answer:

1. A quick skim of the newspaper, the magazine, or the web, when you get your hands on it.

2. A more complete, thorough, grok of the newspaper, the magazine, or the web, if you have the time for it.

3. Quick dips into the newspaper, the magazine, or the web, at odd, serendipitous moments.

4. One last, lingering look at the newspaper, the magazine, or the web, before the clipping, the recycling, the remaindering, or the wrapping of the chips.
