hard heads soft hearts

a scratch pad for half-formed thoughts by a liberal political junkie who's nobody special. ''Hard Heads, Soft Hearts'' is the title of a book by Princeton economist Alan Blinder, and tends to be a favorite motto of neoliberals, especially liberal economists.

The Social Security Debate Explained:

Way back in the winter of nought-four, Chris Anderson linked to a truly great Eschaton comment by one "BunBun vonWhiskers" :

Commercial:

Shot of a Republican
Subtitle: “1975”
R: “We hate Social Security! It’s Socialism in disguise! We need to get rid of it!”

Shot of same Republican, slightly older
Subtitle: “1985”
R: “We hate Social Security! It’ll be bankrupt in 2000! We can’t afford it! People should fend for themselves!”

Shot of Republican, even older
Subtitle: “1995”
R: “We hate Social Security! Social Security is terrible compared to the stock market! Just look at some recent start ups like Enron!”

Shot of Republican, even older
Subtitle: “Present Day”
R: “We love Social Security . . .but Social Security is very sick . . .and we need to give it this special medicine, to make it all better.” (Holds up bottle with skull and crossbones on the label, realizes the label is still visible and quickly covers it up with a smiley face sticker. Republican then smiles at the camera)

I don’t have a pithy saying to wrap it all up, but I like it.

In fact, the entire "debate" over the President's Social Security plan strikes me as having an eerie resemblance to a Simpson's episode:

Bart: Buy me Bonestorm or go to Hell!

Marge: Bart!

Bart: It's the coolest video game ever!

Marge: I'm sorry, honey, but those games cost up to and including $70. And they're violent, and they distract you from your schoolwork.

Bart: Those are all good points, but the problem is they don't result in me getting the game. . .

I often get a "Those are all good points, but the problem is they don't result in me getting the game. . ." vibe when listening to privatization supporters.
